چکیده

In this paper, we consider a simple chemostat model involving a single species feeding on redundant substrate with a constant yield term. Many experiments indicate that very high substrate concentrations actually inhibit growth. Instead of assuming the prevalent Monod kinetics for growth rate of cells, we use a non-monotonic functional response function to describe the inhibitory effect. A detailed qualitative analysis about the local and global stability of its equilibria (including all critical cases) is carried out. Numerical simulations are performed to show that the dynamical properties depend intimately upon the parameters. 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A numerical method for discrete fractional--order chemostat model derived from nonstandard numerical scheme

‎In this paper‎, ‎the fractional--order form of three dimensional chemostat model with variable yields is introduced‎. ‎The stability analysis of this fractional system is discussed in detail‎. ‎In order to study the dynamic behaviours of the mentioned fractional system‎, ‎the well known nonstandard (NSFD) scheme is implemented‎. ‎The proposed NSFD scheme is compared with the forward Euler and ...

Use of chemostat cultures mimicking different phases of wine fermentations as a tool for quantitative physiological analysis

BACKGROUND Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the most relevant yeast species conducting the alcoholic fermentation that takes place during winemaking. Although the physiology of this model organism has been extensively studied, systematic quantitative physiology studies of this yeast under winemaking conditions are still scarce, thus limiting the understanding of fermentative metabolism of wine yeast...

Physiological state, growth mode, and oxidative stress play a role in Cd(II)-mediated inhibition of Nitrosomonas europaea 19718.

The goal of this study was to determine the impact of physiological growth states (batch exponential and batch stationary growth) and growth modes (substrate-limited chemostat, substrate-sufficient exponential batch, and substrate-depleted stationary batch growth) on several measures of growth and responses to Cd(II)-mediated inhibition of Nitrosomonas europaea strain 19718. The specific oxygen...

Modeling lipid accumulation in oleaginous fungi in chemostat cultures. II: Validation of the chemostat model using yeast culture data from literature

A model that predicts cell growth, lipid accumulation and substrate consumption of oleaginous fungi in chemostat cultures (Meeuwse et al. in Bioproc Biosyst Eng. doi: 10.1007/s00449-011-0545-8 , 2011) was validated using 12 published data sets for chemostat cultures of oleaginous yeasts and one published data set for a poly-hydroxyalkanoate accumulating bacterial species. The model could descri...

A mass-structured individual-based model of the chemostat: convergence and simulation

We propose a model of chemostat where the bacterial population is individuallybased, each bacterium is explicitly represented and has a mass evolving continuously over time. The substrate concentration is represented as a conventional ordinary differential equation. These two components are coupled with the bacterial consumption. Mechanisms acting on the bacteria are explicitly described (growt...
